Progressive Health Events Feb & March 2024 - They're Trying to Kill Us

SUNDAY: They’re Trying to Kill Us

Join Dr. Zarek & Dr. Donohue this Sunday, when we will show this important film in honor of Black History Month, on Sunday, February 25th at 6:30pm in the First Unitarian Church on the big screen.

"They're Trying to Kill Us" stars John Lewis as he crosses the country seeking answers to why Americans of Color suffer from disproportionately higher rates of chronic disease than their European American counterparts, while examining the intersections of food, disease, race, poverty, institutional racism and government corruption.  We will have plant based snacks and a discussion after the film to talk about next steps.  Can't join us in person?  You can watch the movie for free for the entire month of February.  Click here to watch the movie for free in February: https://www.theyretryingtokillus.com/

Successful Aging February: How to Cheat Our Leading Killer

On Monday night February 26, from 5-6 pm, Dr. David Donohue will lead a discussion on how to survive heart disease. Although it is our leading killer, heart disease has been described as a “toothless paper tiger that need not exist”. It is nonexistant in parts of the world where people eat more indigenous diets, including typically 100 grams of fiber per day. You too can dodge this paper tiger and have the most regular BMs ever.

Successful Aging March: How to Get a Decent Night’s Sleep?

Sleep is a precious commodity that often goes downhill as we age. To be our best, feel our best, and live our longest, we need our 7-9 hours of beauty sleep.

FAQ

How can I get a decent night sleep??

It depends! But I am keen to share with you my…

Checklist FOR OPTIMAL SLEEP

  1. Avoid frequent use of deadly sedative medications. These drugs can make “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” a reality.

  2. Rule out Sleep Apnea. Super common! If present, we can treat the root cause to make it go away.

  3. Is your biological clock off?

    1. Night Owls may have a circadian clock that is set too late. Solution can include melatonin and morning light box.

    2. People with Early Morning Awakening Insomnia can have a circadian clock that is set too early. Solution is a light box in the evening hours to prevent an early melatonin spike.

  4. Are external factors disrupting a normal healthy sleep cycle? The solution includes normal “sleep hygiene” habits like dimming the lights at night, keeping the bedroom free of distraction.

  5. Are you going to bed too stressed? Solution is to go vagal! We need to calm down your aroused “fight or flight” state with boosting your vagal tone! (Prepare for major vagus nerve science).

  6. And more…

Dr. David Donohue will lead this group program on 2 dates: Wednesday March 13 from 12-1pm, and again on Monday March 25 from 5-6pm.
